Despite the thunder storms and high winds, armed with only warm clothes and sleeping bags to protect them against the November night, around 50 people took part in the Big Sleep Out, last Saturday, to raise money for Off The Fence, a Brighton-based charity, committed to providing life-saving support for the homeless.
Among those spending the night under the stars with were: Ultimate U, Sutton Winson, Sawyer & Co and Kier Construction, as well as youth groups, family groups and individuals.
The event started with a loud thunder storm with amazing lightning, which did not discourage the participants. Everyone survived the night and were rewarded with bacon butties from Youth With A Mission (YWAM) first thing in the morning.
Sleeping in Aldrington School playground isn’t quite the same as sleeping on the streets, however it does give participants an opportunity to get an insight into the challenges faced by those sleeping rough.
Some of the participants were as young as 13 years old and many had taken part in previous years too.
Paul Young, the founder of Off The Fence celebrated his 20th sleep out, says “Each year gets bigger and better! It was an honour to share the night with a fantastic group of people. Thank you for your support to raise funds to prevent death on the streets of our city.”
