Brighton Dome is hosting Together, a free event on Sunday 23 June to support two human rights campaigns: Refugee Weekand Fly the Flag.

Refugee Weekruns from 17 to 23 June in recognition of World Refugee Day on 20 June and is coordinated by Sanctuary on Sea with refugees and groups working with migrants to promote a better understanding of why people seek sanctuary. This year’s theme is You, Me and Those Who Came Before.

The Together Community Day will feature art, music, theatre and dance workshops, performances, plus stalls, food and games from around the world to celebrate the contribution that refugees and migrants have made and continue to make in Brighton & Hove. The day will include a debate at 12 noon in the Old Court House challenging the conventional perceptions of refugees and migration, with a panel of activists, thinkers and human rights practitioners to give an overview of the current situation, a glimpse of the future and how to start to build a path ahead.

Brighton Dome is also proud to support Fly the Flag, a UK-wide arts initiative marking the 70thanniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights from 24 to 30 June. Artist Ai Weiwei has created a special flag to commemorate the date and to represent the campaign. Visitors to the Together Community Day are invited to show their support by making their own min-flags and bunting with characters from Brighton Dome’s history, including suffragettes and Indian soldiers whose lives have made an impact on human rights. Brighton Dome will proudly fly the bunting alongside Ai Weiwei’s flag at the venue during the week.
