Brighton Ghost Stories For Christmas Fundraiser

xmasNow in its 6th year, Brighton’s original Ghost Stories for Christmas charity fundraiser returns to the Lantern Theatre from the 20th to the 22nd of December, in aid of the Brighton Alzheimer’s Society.

Over the years the production has established itself as a regular feature of the Brighton Christmas season whilst raising funds and awareness for local charities THE CLOCKTOWER SANCTUARY, RISE, FARESHARE SUSSEX, THE SUSSEX CANCER FUND and ALLSORTS YOUTH PROJECT all whilst bringing a seasonal chill to our seaside home.

Although the show originally showcased performances of classic stories by M. R James and Charles Dickens, in recent years the team have gained special permission from bestselling authors Stephen King and Ramsey Campbell to include their stories in their productions, as well as being given performance rights by Agatha Christie Ltd to perform one of her lesser known tales of unease.

This year’s production “Ghost Stories for Christmas – Now We are Six” is no exception, with Ramsey Campbell’s  Christmas horror tale ‘The Chimney’ performed alongside ‘The Departed’ by master of horror Clive Barker, who granted permission for his story to be included.

As well as the stories by Barker and Campbell, this year’s production also features a performance of Power Cut by bestselling novelist Joan Aiken. Although Aiken is perhaps best known for her children’s fiction such as ‘The Wolves of Willoughby Chase’ she also penned a number of disturbing stories and permission to include her work in the production was almost immediate from her agent and estate.

‘Ghost Stories for Christmas – Now We Are Six’ promises a journey through the darker sides of childhood and family life, with tales of New Orleans spirits, vengeance from beyond the grave and something rather nasty lurking in the chimney. Guests also receive a mince pie and a glass of mulled wine or apple juice on arrival, to help them feel the Christmas spirit.

Reviews for previous productions:
  • ‘a fixed annual treat’
  • ‘perfectly disturbing….’
  • ‘an ingeniously creative evening of twisted tales… ‘
