Ben Wood, age 16 from Whitehawk, has won the ABA Southern Counties Development Championship, which is a fantastic achievement.
Ben is a member of the East Brighton Amateur Boxing Club (ABC), set up in 2015 to attract and support local young people and adults from East Brighton into the sport of boxing.
Ben was thrilled with his result and told us “I first started boxing to defend myself from bullies when I was 13 years old. Since then I have grown in confidence and have become much fitter and healthier. I love competing for my hometown and county and the feeling of winning a bout is amazing, I have worked hard over the last 3 years and I love the challenge my coaches and I set so I can develop as a Boxer.
My boxing coaches have given me a lot of support and I’ve made many new friends through boxing. My self-esteem has improved massively; three years ago I couldn’t even go up to people and say ‘Hi my name is Ben.’
It was through boxing that I chose human biology at school and I now know about the muscles groups, bones and diet control to keep my body healthy. Over the last 3 years boxing has done a lot for me that I am very grateful for and I don’t know where I would be now without it’
Head Coach at ABC, Darren Snow, believes that boxing is a great way to develop, get healthier and interact with positive role models. He said “I couldn’t be more proud of what Ben has achieved in just 3 years. He is a credit to boxing and to our club. We provide a wide range of skill sets and life skills including high levels of discipline and commitment, self-confidence and determination, and what we do can really make a difference to the lives of young people like Ben”.
ABC Boxing Club is set within The Crew Club, an award winning youth and community centre. To find out more go to: www.crewclub.co.uk
