The deadline for submissions to the next BrightonSoup event, which aims to improve communities, one bowl of soup at a time, is this Friday 27th January.
The unique event, which has been labelled ‘A fun Dragon’s Den – with soup, where you get to be a Dragon‘, provides an opportunity for charitable projects which will benefit local communities to pitch for funding from the evening’s audience.
At the first BrightonSoup, held in Portslade in June, The Purple People Food Bank were awarded a total of £304.50 to help them get their community garden project started.
In Sept in Hangleton, Wide Berth won £300.70 for their craft taster sessions for post-natally depressed mothers.
At the last BrightonSoup event, held at Community Base in Central Brighton last November, Papa John’s Pizza price matched the funding so that the RISE Up Singing choir took home just over £700.
Will Anjos, of BrightonSoup, explained: “Four people each get a few minutes to pitch their idea for a local project. We get a chance to ask them a few questions and then, after food, drink and some musical entertainment, we all vote for our favourite. The winner gets all donations taken at the door. Not a fortune but maybe enough to help get a project started or keep one going.
“It’s not just about the money though, as all the projects benefited from meeting with people who wanted to get involved offering support – materials, skills, time.”
The next BrightonSoup will be held on Friday 19th February at Community Base, 113 Queens Rd, Brighton BN1 3XG.
