South Downs Leisure are helping to tackle Dementia head on and have raised money via a gruelling 3-hour BODYCOMBAT Marathon.
The monster event, which took place over the weekend of National Dementia Carers Day, went ahead at Worthing Leisure Centre on Saturday 8th September and people flocked in to put themselves through a rigorous workout regime for such a great cause.
Dementia costs the UK £26.3 billion a year, with the estimated cost of over £30,000 per person each year and approximately two thirds of these costs are covered directly by people with dementia and/or their families.
Two ‘combatters’, Stevie and KC, went on to raise a staggering £881 between them, with the cause very close to their hearts. Stevie went on to say: “My mum has recently been diagnosed with dementia, as well as my nan and my gran, so it means a lot.” Whilst KC added: “Huge thanks to Bowers & Wilkins, thank you so much for sponsoring us… we’re going to smash it!”
For those not in the know, Les Mills’ BODYCOMBAT is a fiercely energetic class incorporating martial arts disciplines such as karate and boxing. With driving music this makes for an exhilarating and exciting class. And it’s safe to say, they did smash it, as did all the participants that took part, raising a total of £1,945.78 on behalf of the Alzheimer’s Society.
Sally Honey, Health and Wellbeing Manager at South Downs Leisure and Combat Marathon organiser, commented: “Huge thanks go to all the participants for doing so well and to the instructor team for volunteering their time, including the hours spent learning choreography and to the staff at Worthing Leisure Centre that helped the event run so smoothly. The nearly £2,000 raised for this great cause is phenomenal.”
Les Mills’ BODYCOMBAT is just one of the fabulous exercise classes that South Downs Leisure offer and as a FIT4 member you can do this, or one of the other 370+ classes a week, included as part of your membership across 5 sites in Worthing.
