Gardeners of Brighton & Hove – can you help? A local charity is asking residents of Brighton & Hove to spring clean their garden sheds and donate any unwanted garden items to their secondhand garden shop in time for their Spring Fair on Saturday 13th April.
Emmaus Brighton & Hove, based on Drove Road in Portslade are looking for garden-themed items to fill their secondhand garden shop ‘The Greenhouse’.
Best known for the Secondhand Superstore and other social enterprises, Emmaus receives donations from the public which are then resold to provide an income for the community. The site in Portslade homes the Brighton & Hove branch of the national charity Emmaus, an organisation which helps people move on from homelessness by providing them with work and a home in a supportive, family environment. Emmaus Brighton & Hove is the largest Emmaus Community in the UK, with 53 formerly homeless men and women living onsite and staffing the shops and café.
The garden shop can be found in the conservatory at the back of the secondhand superstore and is filled with plants, plant pots, gardening books, tools, garden furniture and garden-themed bric-a-brac as well as a huge selection of faux flowers – all at bargain prices. Many of the plants are grown onsite in the Emmaus polytunnel. Botanical-themed craft workshops frequently take place in The Greenhouse – where members of the public pay a reduced price to learn how to make things such as terrariums and macramé plant hangers or how to draw botanical illustration with proceeds going to support the project. Head to the Emmaus Brighton facebook page for more details or look up Emmaus Brighton on eventbrite.
As well as the garden shop and the polytunnel, the garden project also boasts a community allotment and a popular seed swap drawer, where members of the public can place unwanted seeds and swap them with others for free.
With warmer weather ahead and keen growers getting to work on their gardens and allotments, the Emmaus crew are hoping that gardeners will clear out their potting sheds, greenhouses and summerhouses and donate any unwanted items to the garden shop where they can then be sold on to other green fingered folk. Donations of all good quality gardening items are welcome and collection is available for larger items.
The Greenhouse welcomes donations of the following items:
- Furniture: Patio & conservatory sets, recliners, individual garden chairs
- Gardening tools
- Gardening books and magazines
- Plants: good quality house plants, and outdoor plants
- Viable seeds (for the seed swap drawer)
- Garden themed bric-a-brac: Plant pots, garden gnomes, ornaments, wellies, hampers, macramé hangers, watering cans, vases
