Emmaus Brighton & Hove Celebrate National Gardening Week

Emmaus Greenhouse January (78)

Local homelessness charity Emmaus Brighton & Hove will celebrate National Gardening Week by preparing for the launch of “Succulent City” – their new collection of cacti and succulents, many of which have been grown by the Emmaus team in their onsite polytunnel.

Launching on Saturday 26th May, “Succulent City” will feature a collection of unusual plants, many of which have been donated by the public and propagated by members of “The Greenhouse” social enterprise. The Greenhouse is a garden shop with a difference – based on the Emmaus site in Portslade, it sells all manner of garden related items – indoor and outdoor plants, furniture, books, wellies and much more, most of which is second hand and donated by the public to help support the community.

The launch day will involve a number of plant-themed activities to celebrate the arrival of the collection – as well as macramé workshops and plant pot painting, visitors will be invited to colour in their own house or shop to help Emmaus build the Succulent City display.

As well as the garden shop and the polytunnel, the Emmaus Brighton & Hove garden project also boasts a community allotment and a popular seed swap drawer, where members of the public can place unwanted seeds and swap them with others.

Celebrating its seventh year, National Gardening Week takes place from 30 April to 6 May and is organised by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). This year, there will be a focus on growing plants both indoors and outdoors. Visitors to RHS sites can also attend classes and events throughout the week offering inspiration, tips and advice.

Emmaus Brighton & Hove supports former homeless people (companions) by giving them a home, meaningful work in a social enterprise, alongside training and support to build confidence and increase their well-being.  To find out more visit http://www.emmausbrighton.co.uk/
