Multi award-winning zero waste restaurant Silo is starting 2018 with a new charity partnership with local food redistribution project FareShare Sussex. The UK’s first zero waste restaurant in the heart of Brighton’s North Laine will be supporting the charity through events and fundraising throughout the year.

FareShare Sussex, who share Silo’s vision of a better food system without waste, redistribute surplus food that would otherwise be thrown away to over 100 local charities and community groups that support vulnerable people.

The charity relies on the support of the community to keep up their work preventing

approximately ten tonnes of food from going to waste every week.

The partnership has kicked off with a discretionary £1 donation to Silo’s food bills to give their customers the opportunity to support this important cause when they visit the restaurant.

In addition, Silo has pledged to support FareShare Sussex across the year with other initiatives including a fundraising event in spring to celebrate the charity’s 15 year anniversary.

Silo’s chef and owner, Douglas McMaster has said “Tackling food waste is a two sided coin. Silo’s is a model that prevents waste from the outset, and FareShare ensure the surplus created by the wider food industry does not end up in the bin. We’re extremely grateful to partner with FareShare Sussex, knowing that we can see both sides to better understand the bigger picture. Our partnership will serve as a reminder of why we do what we do.”

Rachel Carless, Development Manager at FareShare Sussex said “We are thrilled to be a charity partner of Silo, who has already done so much to promote and inspire zero waste practices in our city and beyond. The prospect of being able to share our message to Silo’s ethically minded customers is extremely exciting for us; every one pound donated enables us to deliver enough food for five meals to people in our community in food poverty.”

FareShare Sussex is looking for local businesses that are interested in getting involved with their project.
