High praise for Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital

Children and young people have praised the care they receive at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital (the Alex) in Brighton. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) spoke to over 200 young patients and their parents in a survey to find out their views about their time in hospital.

The Trust performed well in all areas, with over 80% of young patients and their parents rating the overall experience as good. The Alex was rated particularly highly in information before an operation or procedure, with almost all children asked saying they were told what would be done.

A spokesperson for the Alex, said: “We welcome this survey which adds to the feedback we hear direct from the children and young people who are treated in our hospital.  The dedicated staff at the children’s hospital include qualified health play specialists who can help children to understand their illness or procedure in an age appropriate way and make sense of their experiences through play.  We work to provide a sense of normality in a potentially stressful environment including helping children to achieve and maintain developmental goals while in hospital.

“We are lucky enough to have a purpose designed building in which we can provide the highest quality of medical and nursing care for children and young people.  And through our charity Rockinghorse, families and the local community support developments such as the amazing sensory garden that opened earlier this year.  We are always open to suggestions of where we can improve and will be looking at the detail of this particular survey.”

As the official fundraising arm of the Alex, here at Rockinghorse we raise money for life-saving and cutting-edge medical equipment, whilst ensuring that children are treated in an environment better suited to their needs. Click here to find out more about our work.
