Homeless Charity Re-Open Second Hand Shop in Portslade

Charity Emmaus has re-opened their much loved charity shop ‘Emporium’ in Portslade this month selling vintage and retro second hand items.

Browsing around the shop, you will find that there is something for everyone. From retro clothes, ‘kitchenalia’, old motorcycle magazines, royal memorabilia, and other kitsch collectables.

Emmaus supports formerly homeless people by giving them a home, meaningful work in a social enterprise and an opportunity to regain lost self-esteem to help rebuild their lives.Emmaus June 2016 Emporium (9)

Emmaus Brighton & Hove is the largest Emmaus Community in the UK, with 47 formally homeless resident ‘companions’ who staff their shops and café. Their Community and shops are situated in Portslade Old Village and in 2017 they will celebrate the Community’s 20th Anniversary.

Companions living in Emmaus communities are expected to sign off all benefits, with the exception of housing benefit, which is used to help to support the community.

Social enterprise is central to the Emmaus model, providing meaningful work for companions and generating funding to maintain communities.

You can visit the newly reopened store Monday – Saturday. 9.30 – 5 pm
