Legal & General sponsored Brighton’s Big Sleep Out on 7th December 2019 at Hove Lagoon. ‘Sleep Out’ events are taking place across the world to raise funds and awareness for homelessness. With a target to raise $50 million, the events are being supported by both businesses and celebrities including Will Smith and Dame Helen Mirren. In Brighton alone, the Sleep Out will see around 500 people sleeping in cardboard boxes and sleeping bags for the night, in support of local charity Sussex Homeless Support.
According to statistics from the Department of Housing, Communities and Local Government, Brighton and Hove has the second largest homeless population in England with one in every 69 people recorded as either homeless or residing in temporary accommodation. As a significant employer and housing operator in the area, Legal & General is dedicated to tackling this growing crisis.
Across the country, Legal & General is investing in initiatives which can help address UK homelessness. Earlier this year, it announced that it had invested £46.6m to provide homes for families on housing waiting lists in Croydon. Alongside, it has launched an Institutional Registered Provider with a committed pipeline of 3,500 affordable homes. Its sponsorship of the Big Sleep Out is another important initiative, which will help contribute to assisting 1 million homeless and displaced people worldwide.
