Residents in West Sussex are being urged to become more carer friendly this Carers Week from 12-18 June.
West Sussex County Council, Carers Support West Sussex and local NHS are joining forces to help build carer friendly communities. Teams are working together to raise awareness of the valuable contribution family and friend carers make.
Over 40 events will take place during the week in different West Sussex locations focusing on a carer’s own wellbeing. Opportunities for carers include a morning vintage tea celebration in Lancing, picnic and walks, and a visit to the Weald and Downland Living Museum and afternoon tea. See events taking place near you by visiting www.carerssupport.org.uk.
Peter Catchpole, County Council Cabinet Member for Adults and Health, said: “Family and friend carers do a really important role, and we should celebrate their daily hard work.
“Recognising that people are increasingly also working at the same time as caring for a family or friend, means getting the right support for them is vital. This carer’s week let’s all become more caring.”
Local employers are also being asked to consider the support available for their staff who are caring for someone.
Jennie Musgrove from Carers Support wants to encourage people to become a ‘Carer Friend’.
Jennie said: “To be a truly carer-friendly county we rely on people recognising an unpaid family or friend carer and helping them to connect with information and support. This is readily available but often a carer simply does not know until they reach crisis. A family and friend carer is anyone who wants to get involved and support carers – we welcome all. So it starts with ‘think carer’ and you can find our team in hospitals or speak to a friendly Carer Wellbeing Worker on 0300 028 8888.”
More support is available to those who cannot visit events in the community. The ‘Jointly’ app is available free of charge to West Sussex carers. It enables users to set up circles of care between everyone involved in someone’s care to share information and messages easily and quickly. The app, which usually costs £2.99, is free with the promotional code DGTL2948. For more information visit www.westsussex.gov.uk/carersweek.
