Local hospices raise over £12,000 from Worthing 10k race

The Sussex based hospices St Barnabas House and Chestnut Tree House raised thousands of pounds thanks to over 2,000 runners who took to the streets of Worthing to take part in this year’s Worthing 10k.

Taking place on Worthing seafront on Sunday 5 June, the Runbase organised event supported both hospices as its official charity partners.

The two hospices have so far raised a combined total of over £12,000 between them having been represented by 160 runners in this year’s road race.

More than 2,000 people completed the race, including 86 who were running for St Barnabas House and 74 who were competing on behalf of children’s hospice Chestnut Tree House.

Those taking part for St Barnabas included father and son team Rob and Alex Harris and Andy Lutwyche of Worthing Cricket Club.

The trio were running to raise awareness of a cricket match being hosted by Worthing Cricket Club against Lashings All-Stars in aid of St Barnabas, which takes place on Wednesday 10 August.

Hugh Lowson, CEO of the two hospices, was the official race starter and presented prizes to the fastest three males and females alongside High Sheriff Mark Spofforth.

Nicky Ifould, Events and Campaigns Fundraiser, said: “It was fantastic to see so many people taking part in the event and we were lucky enough to have nice weather on the day.

“We have already raised over £12,000 for both St Barnabas House and Chestnut Tree House with more to come, which is great for both hospices. In order to continue to provide hospice care services for the local community we are reliant on events such as the Worthing 10k, which play a vital role in raising the funds required to operate the two hospices.

“We would like to say a big thank you to Runbase for supporting our hospices again, and to all of our fantastic runners who took part in this year’s event.”
