Motor Racing Stars Raise Thousands for Charity

A charity motorsport event has raised a staggering £37,000 for Rockinghorse to help young patients treated at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital (the Alex) in Brighton.

‘The Bears Big Bash’ returned for its fourth charity meeting earlier in the summer (Saturday 16 July) in front of a packed crowd at Arlington Stadium in Eastbourne. People of all ages enjoyed an evening of National Banger motor racing organised by The Brighton Bears, the country’s largest and most respected banger racing motorsport team.

Seven months of hard work and planning has ensured the continued success of The Big Bears Bash event, which last year raised over £20,000 for Rockinghorse, enabling the charity to purchase vital heart monitors for the dedicated Children’s Emergency Department at the Alex, as part of their Summer of Sport campaign.

As the official fundraising arm of the children’s hospital, Rockinghorse raises money for items necessary to every child’s treatment; from furnishings and toys for the wards, through to cutting-edge diagnostic machines and life-saving medical equipment.

Funds raised by The Bears at this year’s event will enable the charity to fund ongoing projects at the Alex, as well as providing potentially life-saving defibrillators for schools in Sussex.

Representatives from The Brighton Bears joined Rockinghorse CEO, Ryan Heal, and Community Fundraising Manager, Liz McCluskey, for an official cheque presentation at the children’s hospital last week (Friday 19 August).

Long-time supporter and Ambassador of Rockinghorse, Michael Burnage MBE, helped organise the annual fundraiser, and said: “As a group we were determined to better our fundraising total from last year. Exceeding £20,000 was always going to be a big ask, and so we have held a number of events across the year, including a premiere at Brighton’s Cineworld.

“July’s ‘Big Bash’ event at Eastbourne was the culmination of the year’s activities that saw us not only beat, but smash our previous amounts. As a local team with members drawn from right across the local Sussex community, it means a great deal to us to give back in such a way.”

Liz McCluskey from Rockinghorse, expressed her thanks to Michael and The Bears, she said: “To say we were overwhelmed by the amount raised through The Bears Big Bash event is an understatement – we couldn’t believe it when we heard the news that they had smashed their fundraising target and nearly doubled the amount raised last year!

“We are so very grateful to everyone involved in the event for their incredible efforts, which really will make a difference to the lives of sick children in Sussex.”
