Pedal Power Building For Round The World Cycle Challenge

Brighton Housing Trust’s “Around the World” Cycle Challenge 2017 is gaining pace and event organisers are now calling for even more supporters to increase the pedal power. This mass participation attempt aims to collectively cycle 40,075km, equivalent to the distance around the world, in just 12 hours at Preston Park Velodrome.

It is hoped that this unique event will raise £25,000, to enable First Base Day Centre to continue to help people to move away from the streets, and on to independent BHT Around the World CC Launch (002)and healthy lives. Every penny raised will go towards providing food, health services, showers and laundry facilities, and most importantly person-centred advice to help find accommodation and employment.

BHT Around the World CC Launch Manager of First Base, Simon Hughes, said: “Every single person who takes part in the Around the World Cycle challenge will be helping us to make a real difference to the lives of people who need our services. It was with the support of the community that last year we were able to help 306 people to move off the streets.”

With various cycling slots for children, adults, hand cyclists and adapted bicycles, and club cyclists, this family-friendly challenge is something for the whole community to get involved with. There is even the option to take part on an exercise bike at home or at the gym.

The very first lap to count towards the challenge was clocked by The Mayor of Brighton & Hove, Pete West, and his driver, Robert Robinson, who launched the Around the World Cycle challenge with a lap on their tandem.

There are many ways that people can support the event for First Base Day Centre, who hope that it will become an annual event in the city’s calendar.

1) Register today to take part and begin fundraising via BHT’s JustGiving Page.
The target is 1000 cyclists participating to reach the target distance in 12 hours!

Don’t own a bike? Can’t make it to the velodrome on the day? No problem! You can take part on an exercise bike at home or at the gym, or on your bicycle anywhere in the country – simply register online, and email or tweet us with your distance cycled to be added to the grand total. You can still fundraise for BHT too!

2) Form a team with your family, friends or colleagues and set yourselves a team lap target. You could challenge the other groups on the City Council, even re-run the general election, but this time on bicycles and at the Preston Park Velodrome!

3) Volunteer to help out on the day
BHT need 60 volunteer marshals and stewards to make sure everything runs smoothly. If you can volunteer 2 hours or more please email Sara Peskett

4) Help Promote the event
More information about the event can be found at www.bht.org.uk, on Twitter (@BHT_Sussex) and on Facebook (@BHTSussex). Please share the event with all of your contacts, and encourage them to get involved!

Jo Berry, Head of Fundraising & Publicity, said: “It will take a real group-effort to reach the target, so we are calling on the community to come along and get pedalling. You could set yourself, your family or your work colleagues a personal challenge, as every lap counts. Not only will it be a fantastically enjoyable day, you will also be supporting a really important local cause.”
