The annual Brighton Legal Walk will take place on 10 September to raise funds for local advice services including Citizen’s Advice, Money Advice Plus, Possability People and BHT’s Brighton Advice Centre (part of Brighton Housing Trust).
The Brighton Legal Walk is organised by London Legal Support Trust which supports law centres and legal advice agencies in London and the South East. BHT’s Brighton Advice Centre staff will be joining other local lawyers and advisers on the 10km sponsored walk to raise awareness of and funds for important legal advice services in Brighton.
BHT’s Brighton Advice Centre provides specialist housing and money management advice, an immigration legal service, and a Court Duty Scheme which provides last-minute emergency advice for people facing eviction. Last year alone they supported 422 people with specialist housing advice and prevented 149 people from becoming homeless. Their Court Duty Scheme provided representation in 194 cases where people were facing eviction, resulting in a further 172 families not losing their home. 84% of the immigration cases they took on last year had a positive outcome.
Suzanne Hennell, BHT’s Senior Advice Manager, said:
“We are so grateful to everyone who takes part in these walks every year, which raise much needed funds for BHT’s Brighton Advice Centre and others providing essential legal advice to vulnerable local people.
With cuts to Legal Aid, services like ours are under pressure, and fundraising events like this are really important in helping us to continue our work to ensure that people can have access to justice regardless of their circumstances.”
