St Barnabas benefactor supplies beauty gifts for ‘Night to Remember’

The Sussex-based charity St Barnabas House is delighted that Richard John Hair and Beauty are Official Supporters of their biggest fundraiser, the hospice’s Night to Remember midnight walk, which takes place on Saturday 25 June.

Richard John Hair and Beauty, Worthing, is one of St Barnabas House’s biggest benefactors this year, donating thousands of pounds worth of gifts and prizes for the participants of this year’s event.

On the night of 25 June 2016, ladies will be walking through the night to support the St Barnabas House night service, which cares for patients in their own homes, through the darkest hours and often most challenging time. Participants have the choice of three routes – 7, 13.1 mile (half marathon) along Worthing’s streets and seafront, and a 20 mile route through Worthing to Shoreham and back. The Night to Remember event has raised over £1 million over the last eight years and this year walkers and fundraisers will receive special gifts from the Official Supporters.

Richard John Hair and Beauty are offering vouchers for a complimentary hair appointment or beauty treatment for every walker, and prizes for top fundraisers. The top Individual Fundraiser will be treated to a full hair and beauty makeover, including Colour, Cut and Deep Conditioning Treatment and Style-dry with an Artistic Director, Clarins Tri-Active Facial with a Senior Therapist and Luxury Manicure. The top Fundraising Team will have the choice between Group Hair Styling or Group Mini-manicure. In addition, a further four lucky fundraisers will be chosen at random to receive other fabulous beauty treatments and therapies.

For the last eight years, local businessman and entrepreneur, Richard John, has supported his local hospice. He has donated gifts and prizes to the charity for fundraising events, and has also given raffle and tombola prizes to other local businesses who fundraise for St Barnabas House. The company host ‘Hairstyling Evenings’ twice a year at Centrestage and there will be a ‘Clarins’ Evening’ at Richard John on 1 March, with raffle, demonstrations and goodie bags.

Eight years ago, Richard John’s PA, Sue Crossfield, walked the very first Night to Remember with a colleague, and so the relationship between the salon and the hospice began. Sue still has very vivid memories of the night. So much so, she welled up as she described her experience: “It was the most lovely, amazing atmosphere and it felt so good to be doing something good for St Barnabas House.

“The event was really well marshalled, and I particularly remember the wonderful encouragement we got from all the volunteers. I loved the refreshment stops and the bananas and Mars bars – it was much needed sustenance. I remember feeling so good finishing in about 5 and a half hours, and as I returned to Worthing Leisure Centre the sun was rising. It was all quite wonderful.”

She remembers people coming out of their houses in the middle of the night and onto their balconies in Shaftesbury Avenue, Worthing, shouting encouragement. And passing cars tooted in support of the walkers. Sue says she remembers the first midnight walk exceeded all expectations in terms of fundraising and it has gone from strength to strength, raising vital funds for the hospice. Over the last eight years the event has raised over £1 million.

This year, Richard John Hair and Beauty hope some of the staff will take part in the midnight walk – either walking or volunteering. “I don’t think that will be too difficult, there is a lovely warm atmosphere at the salon, and the camaraderie among the staff is clearly very strong, so I’m sure they’ll succeed in getting a team together for an amazing night” Sue added.

Over 1200 participants took part last year, raising £160,000 and registration is at www.nighttoremember.org.uk/stb or 01903 706354 for just £20 entry or an early bird entry fee of just £15 if registering before 8 April. For groups of five or more walkers registering together, the hospice will value you as one of their ‘Superstars’, and you can apply for the sixth place free.
