Sussex hospice thanks community for 40th anniversary support

The St Peter & St James Hospice’s celebrated its 40th anniversary with a special appeal which has raised £37,595 through activities and events throughout the year but as its Retail Department has grown they are still in need of more volunteers.

The Hospice are keen to thank everyone who has contributed in any way during the 40th anniversary year – through donating, fundraising, volunteering or providing services. As St Peter & St James makes plans for more exciting activities for 2016, it is hoped that all the supporters will continue contributing in any way in making a series of successful events throughout the year.

St Peter & St James is the Sussex hospice caring for patients in Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath, Lewes, Uckfield and surrounding villages. With a population of 200,000, if every person in the catchment area gave just £1 a month this would nearly cover the running costs. All the Hospice services are free of charge to patients and loved ones and St Peter & St James relies on its local community for 86% of its funds, as just 14% comes from the Government.

Peter Boyse, Chairman of St Peter & St James Hospice, said, “Our 40th anniversary appeal has been warmly received and, thanks to the incredible generosity of our local community, we have raised £37,595 from the appeal alone. I’d like to encourage as many people as possible to get involved with the events we have planned for 2016 because we really need the support in order that we can continue providing our vital services free of charge to our local community. In fact, we help one in six families in our catchment area, so have a big impact on our local community and anyone wishing to donate can still do so on our website.”

St Peter & St James Hospice’s Retail Department relies on volunteer support and, as the business has grown, is needing more volunteers. P1050566

The areas where volunteers are needed are in the shops, warehouse and dealing with online and mail order business. At the unit in Uckfield, the Hospice would welcome volunteers with skills in IT, using EBay and Amazon, as well as helping with administrative tasks for packaging and despatching.

Thérèse Wilson, Head of Retail at St Peter & St James Hospice, said, “There is so much more to the St Peter & St James Hospice Retail business than our eight shops on the high street and there are some really interesting jobs for volunteers behind the scenes. We’d be so grateful to hear from anyone who can spend some time to help us.”

Training and support will be provided for all new volunteers, so if anyone would like to find out more, and has a morning or afternoon to spare, simply call 01444 470817.
