Vegan Entrepreneurs Celebrate With Charity Fundraiser

A pair of vegan entrepreneurs are celebrating the first anniversary of their business with a fundraiser for two charities close to their hearts.

Vegan cooks Molly Kyte and Gabriella Rizzello of Brighton based food start-up Planted are hosting an evening of vegan cocktails and canapés, with all proceeds from ticket sales going to Diabetes UK and The Forever Friends Appeal.

Describing themselves as ‘two home cooks with a shared love of all things food’, the Planted ethos is all about naturally healthy, seasonal, plant based ingredients.

Molly and Gabriella met whilst working at a central Brighton Gelateria and bonded over their love of food and the realisation that they had both lost their mothers at a young age to cancer and diabetes respectively. Their 1st birthday event will recognise this, with funds being split between Diabetes UK and The Forever Friends appeal – a charity that Molly’s Mum worked closely with and raised over 100K for in the last years of her life.

The business was launched in 2016 when, after both adopting a vegan diet around the same time, the duo struggled to find vegan versions of their favourite dishes. The desire to recreate popular foods with non-animal ingredients soon evolved into a business idea and Planted was born.

Of the decision to launch their own business, Molly says “We wanted to create a place and a feeling of inclusivity whatever your food choices are, to show people that actually plants are pretty amazing” and her business partner Gabriella said “We concentrate on being inclusive of everybody, to show people that vegan food can be vibrant and innovative, rather than bland and boring as the stigma suggests”.

As well as supplying baked goods to cafes in and around Brighton, Molly and Gabriella also run a pop-up every month, where a different location plays host to an elaborate 5 course meal made only of plant-based ingredients.

With Mediterranean food often on the menu, Gabriella enjoys the chance to recreate traditional meals that she loved as a child spending summers in Italy with her family. She says “Our pop up events are an exciting and different way to experience plant based dining – they’re about bringing people together to share delicious and nutritious food in a beautiful setting. Our communal table, always dressed with rosemary, is a great place to meet new faces whilst enjoying a delicious plant based meal.”

The 1st birthday party will be held on 27th April at The Plant Room in Brighton Square, with food, cocktails and music on the bill. All are welcome and tickets are available from the Planted website. Of the celebration, Molly says “The 1st birthday party is our chance to say thank you to all those who have supported the Planted journey so far and to welcome new people who would like to find out more about the food we make. This time last year we packed up our full time jobs and embarked on our plant based dream of running pop ups. A year on and we still can’t believe we wake up each day doing what we love. We’ve been so blown away by the support for our business in the past year and we’re delighted that so many people – vegans and non-vegans, are enjoying our food so much. Our food is for everyone, and in fact, most of the visitors to our pop-ups aren’t vegan at all, they’re just people who love good food.”
